Anxiety is often seen as a strictly mental health problem. Less attention is paid to the effects that anxiety can have on the whole body. Gastrointestinal problems are common, and heart disease, respiratory disorders, and thyroid problems are also linked to anxiety, as a cause or an effect.
Professional golfer Bubba Watson’s struggles with anxiety included severe anxiety attacks, substantial weight loss, and insomnia. His personal and professional life suffered, and daily, he tried to cope with what he called “the noise in his head.”
“The Bible says life isn’t easy. Life just builds. People writing articles that make me look bad. People saying bad things about me. That’s built in my head, that I’m not a good person, I’m not a good golfer, I’m not the husband I need to be, I’m not the friend I need to be.”
“So I put my own expectations on myself and it keeps building and building. And sometimes you go to a breaking point. Luckily for me, my breaking point has never driven me to drinking or drugs.”
It is very common for people living with anxiety to self-medicate with destructive substances like excessive alcohol or drugs. The fix is temporary, though, and after it wears off, the body is in worse shape than before.
For an athlete like Bubba Watson, harming his body meant also hurting his livelihood and his ability to provide for his family. Much of his anxiety came from a fear that he would fall short, that he couldn’t be the husband, friend, or athlete that he needed to be. Substance abuse would have very likely trapped him in a vicious cycle, and the weight loss and other physical effects of his anxiety were already too much to bear.
Fortunately, the two-time Masters champion had a strong support system of friends and family. He also sought professional help, including a breathing coach, and he started using CBD oil tinctures. Watson uses the CBD oil to “calm his mind” and get better sleep. For him, CBD isn’t a magic solution, but it is an important piece in his mental health puzzle. As Watson simply puts it, “[CBD oil] helps me.”
