Why was Rob Gronkowski walking away from all this success?
At age 29, NFL star announced he was retiring from professional football. He had gone to the Super Bowl with the Patriots and won three times, and in 2014, he was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He held NFL records for most touchdowns in a season by a tight end and most career touchdowns in the postseason by a tight end.
Gronkowski was living with chronic pain, and it was starting to also affect his mental well-being. He disliked the prevalence of painkillers in the league and worried about the long-term effects on him.
“ It’s tough, it’s difficult. To take hits to the thigh, to take hits to your head, abusing your body, isn’t what your brain wants. When your body is abused, it can bring down your mood.”
After walking away from the NFL, Gronkowski spent the next year recovering and letting himself heal. He credits a large part of his recovery – and now living pain-free – to CBD products, and he wishes that he could have used it when he was first playing.
When he returned to the NFL in 2020, he was part of yet another Super Bowl champion team. He also came back as an outspoken advocate for CBD in the NFL, which at the time had a policy against its use. According to the league’s rules, players could be suspended for using CBD products.
In early 2020, however, the NFL relaxed its restrictions, reducing penalties for its usage and doing away with suspensions. By sharing his experience and how CBD helped his daily pain management, Gronkowski might have helped shift the league’s policy.
